1320 July: Jews to pay tax

Recorded by the Code of Yuan

The Code of Yuan recorded: “Muslims, Nestorians, Shuhu (术忽, Jews), and Dashiman (答失蛮, Islamic Imams), except those in actual charge of temples and services, to pay tax.”

Shuhu (朮忽) referred to the Jews

Professor Rudolf Loewenthal (罗文达, 1904–1996) pointed out that the term Jews was translated into Chinese as Shuhu (朮忽). Shuhu Huihui (朮忽回回) was also often used. Huihui (回回) was a general term for foreigners from Central Asia.

Shuhu originated from the Persian word Djuhud

Donald D. Leslie (1922–2020) explained that the term Shuhu is a phonetic transliteration of Djuhud, the colloquial term for Jews in the Persian language.
